Lord Derby Autograph Letter Signed - an important letter hand written and signed by Lord Derby, Secretary of State for War during the First World War, to Lord Kitchener in which he refers to the Derby Scheme for recruitment in 1915. The Derby Scheme was an attempt to overcome the problem of dwindling volunteer recruitment without resorting to compulsory military service. The letter reads in full: "Please look through the enclosed - it has been very hurriedly dictated and is crude, but I hope it will give you an idea of what I want to do. I have got to speak on the subject at 3 so will try and see you in the morning. It is really your plan given a trial under the voluntary system. It will succeed.. the press has taken the scheme very well."
